One very important aspect of Austin Voices' work is our focus on opening the door for young people to utilize their interests and talents to express themselves with regard to education and community issues, and at the same time, helping them gain professional experience. In that vein, we sponsor Stand Up, which is a web of youth across Austin who are connected because they want to create positive change in our community. A big part of the Stand Up work is their line of youth-made merchandise. Alice Geaccone, one of our youth consultants, directs the Youth Merchandising project. In the words of Alice herself, "From the beginning of my merchandising consultant job I was set on having all of our products created by youth for youth. I believe this is an effective way to connect and organize ideas and opinions of young people." Through creating merchandise, youth have a positive outlet to make their voices heard in issues that matter to them through creative expression.
After purchasing a button maker, spray paint, bulk t-shirts, and a binding machine, we reached out to middle school students, students in after school programs, and other high school students to pull together an impressive array of merchandise. All profits go to fund youth-directed organizing projects! |
