(Update-April, 2022): Since the beginning of the federal HRSA COVID-19 vaccination grant, Austin Voices has hired and trained 40 parents as “Promotoras” (community health workers) who are active in the community supporting vaccinations. 5,206 recipients have been vaccinated and completed a survey that helps HRSA focus federal vaccine efforts more effectively. Local grant partners have made hundreds of thousands of contacts through social media, in-person meetings, block walking and other means to targeted areas with low vaccination rates. A series of upcoming Town Hall Meetings developed by AVEY (in partnership with Austin Public Health) will address the changing landscape of COVID, including where we are with second boosters.

Austin Voices has received a one-year federal HRSA COVID-19 vaccination grant, aimed at increasing vaccinations among underserved populations, as well as training a new generation of Community Health Outreach Workers. AVEY’s proposal has created a collaborative between the African-American Youth Harvest Foundation, Central Texas Food Bank, El Buen Samaritano, People’s Community Clinic, River City Youth Foundation and Workers Defense Project, with each group aiming at different physical and cultural geographies. The partnership also includes Dell Medical School, Austin Public Health and Walgreen’s providing support for both small and large COVID vaccination events.

Community Health Outreach Workers are currently being recruited and trained. CHOWs will receive $15 per hour for training and outreach activities. If you would like to know more about becoming a CHOW, contact ncaballero@austinvoices.org.
