Life Skills In Middle School
Since 2005, Austin Voices has partnered with the school district to support the social and emotional development of middle school students by providing quality resources and trainings to our middle schools.
With seed money from the Public Education Network and support from local foundations, Austin Voices has provided 14 middle schools with classroom sets of the research-based LifeSkills™ curriculum. This curriculum is a nationally recognized and evidenced-based tobacco, drug, alcohol, and violence prevention curriculum that focuses on teaching students general social skills, personal management strategies, and social resistance skills. Through interactive activities students learn how to make decisions, how to navigate social requests, and how to cope with anger and anxiety. Currently, we are working closely with AISD’s Positive Behavior Supports Department to ensure that our middle schools and their teachers have the resources and supports they need to effectively implement the LifeSkills curriculum with their students.
In addition, Austin Voices has created a series of positive youth development trainings for teachers and youth service workers including LifeSkills teacher trainings, book study circles, and relationship-building activities. In the past three years, over 800 people have participated in our trainings!
